The History of the Department

The department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Psychotherapy of the Advanced Training and Professional Development at Tyumen State Medical Academy (TSMA)

The department was founded in 2001 as part of the Advanced Training and Professional Development faculty. Professor, Doctor of Med. Sc., S.M. Umansky was appointed head of the department. The teaching staff are N.L. Muratova, Candidates of Medical Sciences O.A. Kalinichenko, S.E. Boyarintseva, N.I. Kutsenko, A.G. Kondinsky (currently holding the position of chief doctor at St. Petersburg Bekhterev Psychoneurological Research Institute), and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor P.B. Zotov.  S.M. Umansky has been a member of the Council of Mental Health Research Centre, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Tomsk. For a long time the primary issue studied at the department was the adaptation of industrial workers (both mentally ill and healthy people) on the model of Uralo-West-Siberian region. Currently, the department prepares interns and attending physicians, in addition to upgrading and raising professional standards of doctors in psychiatry, psychiatry-narcology and psychotherapy. The scientific work of the department is aimed at studying endogenous diseases (schizophrenia: pathomorphism and ways of treating it); alcoholic psychosis (pathomorphism of different patient populations; its regional peculiarities); suicidal behavior (suicidal symptoms of mentally and somatically ill patients; the development of preventive measures). Since 2001, 3 doctorate and 9 candidate dissertations have been defended at the department.

Head of the department of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy at the Regional Clinical Mental Hospital, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Denis V. Kultyshev became head of the department on 1st September in 2012. Denis V. Kultyshev is now Chairman of Tyumen Regional association of psychiatrists, narcologists and psychotherapists. Besides, Denis V. Kultyshev is a member of the East European Association for Existential Therapy.

The department boasts its highly-qualified specialists, known not only throughout Russia but also abroad: Professor, Doctor of Med. Sc., S.M. Umansky; Professor, Doctor of Med. Sc., head psychotherapist of the Directorate General of Health Services of Kurgan region, S.V. Umansky; doctor psychiatrist-narcologist, Candidate of Med. Sc., M.S. Umansky; psychotherapist, Candidate of Med. Sc. I.V. Obchinnikova; and the department’s assistant P.S. Umanskaya. All the teaching staff perform treatment-and-consultation work and pass on their experience and knowledge to practitioners, conducting clinical analyses, holding conferences and scientific workshops.
